Garden Rooms, Orangeries and Conservatories

Grants have been designing, manufacturing and fitting blinds for garden rooms, orangeries and conservatories for over 35 years and gained invaluable experience. Innovations include reflective coatings, curved guide tracks and ways to conceal blinds for minimum visual impact.

Although the idea of garden rooms, orangeries and conservatories is to appreciate the light, these buildings tend to get very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Reasons for having blinds also include decoration, privacy, glare management, and security. Our most popular shading solutions for garden rooms, orangeries and conservatories are French PinoleumPleated Blinds, and Roller Blinds. They can all be used in both skylights and windows.

Our traditional French Pinoleum is woven using narrow strips of carefully prepared wood, with all timber being produced from sustainable sources. As a natural insulator, Pinoleum has excellent shading properties while it also allows delicately filtered light through the weave, helping create a relaxed colonial feel.

Solarwood ® is our own carefully engineered reflective backing. It increases the reflection of heat, glare and UV transmissions while allowing the soft light effect of the weave to continue to filter through. The high-performance lining is attached discreetly to the reverse side of the blinds.

For a final touch to the design, we can paint or stain the French Pinoleum in any colour, to match the room perfectly.

Grants Pleated Blinds are made of high performance materials (e.g. voile, semi-transparent, opaque, and blackout) and can be provided with specialist solar reflective backing. Cellular blinds, such as Honeycomb pleated blinds, are made up of two or more layers joined at the pleats to form compartments that trap air, providing insulation. These can all be made to be stacked at the top, or even a floating stack. If you need a blind that is more flexible, we can manufacture these blinds as a day/night blind.

Pleated Blinds can be operated manually or via full motorisation.

Roller Blinds provides a clean, contemporary look and can be made fully concealed when not in use. They can be used in large skylights without any wires, and really are the only solution when you require 100% light exclusion/blackout. Roller Blinds are available in a range of high performance materials (e.g. transluscent voile cloth material, screen material, opaque, blackout) and Grants can make bespoke roller blinds using Clients' own material.

Pulmonary Fibrosis is a terminal lung condition affecting at least 15,000 adults in the UK. Each year 5,000 people die from the disease and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is around three years. The disease causes scar tissue to build up in the lungs, ultimately preventing the lungs from transferring oxygen into the body. This leads to shortness of breath that worsens as the disease progresses, and ultimately ends in respiratory failure. Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis is working to improve the experience of patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis. It aims to ensure that all patients, wherever they live in the UK, receive the best treatment and care possible.

There is no cure

Joshua's mother, Kathryn Chase, was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis 3 years ago. As for many patients the cause is unknown as Kathryn has lived a healthy life not smoking or having a job with occupational exposures. She is now on Oxygen and medication all the time. Kathryn is hoping to get a lung transplant to improve survival and quality of life. Lung transplantation is unfortunately not a cure and five years after transplantation five out of ten people would be alive and ten years after transplant only one or two people would still be alive. More research is needed to find a cure.

Second Showcase Showroom to open in central London

Grants and David Salisbury is currently building a second showroom, close to our orangery at The Chelsea Gardener. The new showroom is in the style of a modern kitchen extension with large glazing areas, sloping head floor to ceiling windows and three skylights. You will find curtains with beautifully recessed tracks, built in and fully concealed Lutron self-aligning blinds in windows, and totally concealed double blinds including the hem bars within skylights showing blackout, sunscreen, flyscreen, and blinds in new materials.

Featuring the art of concealed blinds, the new showroom is a unique opportunity to see, touch and understand how we are becoming the market leader. To conceal blinds and wires with minimum visual impact, planning for shading must be done early so there is space available around skylights and bi-folding doors. In the new showroom we are using 100x80MM blindspace boxes across the full width of the floor-to-ceiling glazing area, and larger customized boxes for double blinds in skylights. Just as you are recessing and preparing electrical wiring for spotlights and speakers today, you can now easily plan to recess curtain tracks prepared for motorised or manual curtains.

Being able to visit a working showroom and talk to professionals with years of practical knowledge made the difference to my project.

Smart blinds for smart homes

There is a growing interest in motorised blinds, both stand-alone products and integrated with systems such as Apple HomeKit, Nest, and Crestron.

Grants is a solution-led company, and a Lutron approved specialist fabricator.  Based on over 35 years of experience, we design bespoke products to work with any type of window, gable or skylight. With our new solution to conceal blinds, motorised blinds can be hidden for minimum visual impact and noise.

Architects and interior designers are increasingly considering blinds as part of daylighting design for buildings. Consideration should start at the building’s conceptual design phase, when working on shapes and window sizes.

Home owners are requesting concealed blinds that can be controlled by phones or digital personal assistants such as Amazon Alexa, integrated with home automation systems. By preparing new buildings with concealed Blindspace boxes, architects are now able to provide a space for blinds early on, still leaving all options for blind selection to later.

Innovation in concealed blinds

Grants has used its experience from more than 30 years of state-of-the-art bespoke installations worldwide, to co-develop an innovative solution to conceal blinds.

There are increasing requirements to design smart homes with concealed and automated shading solutions to control natural light and privacy.

Concealed Blinds

Together with leading architects and the Swedish company Blindspace, Grants has developed a solution to conceal blinds for floor-to-ceiling glazingskylights, and gables. The solution consists of backboxes, installed empty above or around glazing areas during construction, and detachable covers. When construction work is completed, blinds and side channels can be installed inside backboxes with covers adjusted to minimise visual impact. Blinds can be for decoration, privacy, 100% blackout for cinema rooms and bedrooms, built-in insect screens, all with no visible side channels. Covers can be faced with material such as timber, stainless steel, or painted to perfectly match the surrounding walls.
